2026 RBT Exam Structure

The BACB exam has 85 questions — only 75 are scored. You have 90 minutes. Here’s exactly what’s on it.

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) exam is required to obtain RBT certification. Before taking the exam, you must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma, complete a 40-hour training program, pass a background check, and complete the Initial Competency Assessment.

The exam is administered by Pearson VUE at testing centers. The BACB application fee is $65, plus a $45 exam appointment fee paid to Pearson VUE ($110 total). The BACB reports approximately 74% of candidates pass on their first attempt.

Each question has four possible answer choices, and only one correct answer. The 10 unscored questions are randomly scattered throughout the test — you won’t know which ones they are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I take the RBT exam?
The RBT exam is administered in person at Pearson VUE testing centers. You cannot take it from home. You’ll select your testing center location when you schedule through the BACB website.
What is the passing score for the RBT exam?
+
The BACB uses a scaled scoring method, so there is no fixed pass/fail number. However, a general estimate is that you need to correctly answer around 68–72% of the 75 scored questions. The BACB does not publish an official cut score.
How much does the RBT exam cost?
+
There are two separate fees. First, you pay a $65 application fee to the BACB when you submit your certification application. Once approved, you pay an additional $45 exam appointment fee directly to Pearson VUE when you schedule your test. Total cost: $110. Both fees are non-refundable.
How many times can I retake the RBT exam?
+
You may retake the RBT exam up to 8 times within 12 months. If you do not pass within 8 attempts, your application expires. You’ll need to wait 90 days after a failed attempt before you can retest.
Is the RBT exam hard to pass?
+
It’s not easy, but it’s very passable with consistent preparation. The BACB reports approximately 74% of candidates pass on the first attempt. Using practice exams, unit quizzes, and a structured study plan significantly improves your chances.
How long should I study for the RBT exam?
+
Most candidates study for 2–4 weeks before the exam. We recommend completing all four practice exams, reviewing your weak domains using unit quizzes, reading the study guide, and finishing with a timed mock exam the week before your test date.
What topics are on the RBT exam?
+
The 2026 RBT exam covers six content domains: Data Collection & Graphing (12 questions), Behavior Assessment (6), Behavior Acquisition (24), Behavior Reduction (12), Documentation & Reporting (10), and Ethics (11). All 75 scored questions are drawn from these six areas — aligned to the 3rd Edition Test Content Outline.
What’s the difference between RBT, BCBA, and BCaBA?
+
The RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is the entry-level certification — you implement behavior plans under supervision. The BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) and BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) are higher-level credentials requiring college degrees and more training hours.
