2026 Exam Structure & Content Overview

The BACB RBT® exam contains 85 multiple-choice questions — only 75 are scored. You have 90 minutes. Here is exactly what is covered on the Registered Behavior Technician® certification exam and how our practice questions map to every domain.

The Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®) is credentialed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Before sitting for the exam, candidates must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma, complete a 40-hour training program covering applied behavior analysis skills, pass a background check, and complete the Initial Competency Assessment.

The test is administered by Pearson VUE at testing centers — in-person only, not at home. The BACB application fee is $65, plus a $45 appointment fee paid to Pearson VUE ($110 total). Approximately 74% of candidates pass on their first attempt. Our practice questions are designed to help you prepare and pass with confidence.

Each item has four multiple-choice answer options with one correct response. The 10 unscored questions are randomly scattered throughout. Understanding exam structure and content is your first step in your prep journey.

Student Success Stories

Real Students. Real Results. Real Confidence on Exam Day.

ABA terminology was completely new to me. After completing all four practice exams and reading every explanation, the actual exam felt familiar. The behavior acquisition and reinforcement questions especially matched what I saw on test day. Passed with a comfortable margin on my first attempt.

I failed once using a different site. The explanations here made the difference. Not just “B is correct” but actually showing why the other three are wrong. That changed how I approached ethics and documentation questions entirely. Passed my retake two weeks later.

I studied entirely on my phone during lunch breaks. The site worked perfectly on mobile with no issues. Finished all 4 practice exams in 10 days while working full time. The domain quizzes helped me master data collection skills I had been losing points on. Passed first try!

What is this practice exam and who is it for? +
The free practice exam on this site is a full-length, BACB-aligned mock exam designed for anyone studying for the Registered Behavior Technician® certification. It is built for aspiring RBTs who want realistic exam questions, applied behavior analysis (ABA) practice, and the best study materials before sitting for the official Pearson VUE test. Whether you want to test your knowledge, drill practice quizzes, or simulate actual exam conditions, this is your complete free prep resource.
How many questions are on the RBT exam and how long do I have? +
The RBT exam contains 85 multiple-choice questions, but only 75 are scored. The remaining 10 are unscored pilot questions randomly distributed throughout. You have 90 minutes to complete it at a Pearson VUE testing center. Topics include behavior acquisition, reinforcement, skill acquisition, and ethics across all six BACB RBT® Task List domains. All four of our practice tests mirror this exact format.
What is the passing score on the RBT exam? +
The BACB uses a scaled scoring method and does not publish an official cut score. The general guidance is that correctly answering approximately 68 to 72 of 75 scored questions indicates a strong pass. Approximately 74% of candidates pass on their first attempt. Focus on mastering all six domains with consistent exam practice.
How much does the RBT exam cost? +
There are two separate fees: $65 to the BACB when submitting your application, plus $45 to Pearson VUE when scheduling your test. Total cost: $110. Both fees are non-refundable. All practice exams, the mock exam, domain quizzes, flashcards, and the study guide on this site are completely free.
Is there a free RBT practice exam online? +
Yes. rbtpracticeexam.net offers four completely free practice exams, a timed mock exam, six domain quizzes, flashcards, and a full study guide. No account, email, or credit card is required. You can start a free practice test right now with zero sign-up.
What are the eligibility requirements for the RBT exam? +
To sit for the BACB RBT® exam you must: (1) be at least 18 years old; (2) hold a high school diploma or GED; (3) complete a minimum 40-hour training program covering the BACB Task List, supervised by a BCBA or BCaBA; (4) pass a criminal background check; and (5) complete the Initial Competency Assessment (ICA) within 90 days before submitting your application.
Can I retake the RBT exam if I fail? +
Yes. You may retake the exam up to 8 times within a 12-month period, with at least 7 days between attempts. If you do not pass within 8 attempts, your application expires. Use domain quizzes and practice questions to close gaps in reinforcement, extinction, chaining, and other key areas before your next attempt.
Can I take the RBT exam online or at home? +
No. The RBT® exam is administered in person only at an authorized Pearson VUE testing center. There is no at-home or online proctored option. You must schedule your appointment through Pearson VUE and appear in person on test day. You can, however, complete all practice exams, the mock exam, and quizzes entirely online at no cost to prepare.
What is the difference between the 2nd Edition and 3rd Edition Task List? +
The BACB released the RBT® Task List 3rd Edition in 2023. It is the active standard for all 2024 and 2026 exams. The 3rd Edition updated domain weighting, removed some legacy 2nd Edition sub-tasks, and refined ethics and documentation items. All questions on this site are written against the 2026 3rd Edition Test Content Outline.
How long should I study for the RBT exam? +
Most candidates benefit from 2 to 4 weeks of structured study. Recommended plan: complete all four practice exams in week one to find weak domains. Drill those areas with quizzes and the study guide in week two — focus on reinforcement, skill acquisition, preference assessment, and differential reinforcement. Finish with the timed mock exam the week before test day to simulate real Pearson VUE conditions.
What is the difference between RBT, BCBA, and BCaBA? +
The RBT® (Registered Behavior Technician) is the entry-level certification in applied behavior analysis, credentialed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). RBTs implement behavior plans and deliver behavior analytic services under BCBA supervision. The BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) and BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) are higher-level credentials requiring college degrees, behavior analysis coursework, and many more supervised hours. This site focuses exclusively on RBT® certification exam preparation.
