2026 RBT Exam Structure & Content Overview

The Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®) exam contains 85 multiple-choice questions, of which 75 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot items. You have 90 minutes to complete the exam. Every question on this site maps directly to one of the six BACB content domains so your practice questions reflect the real exam experience.

To sit for the RBT exam you must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, complete a 40-hour training program based on the BACB RBT Task List (3rd Edition), pass an Initial Competency Assessment overseen by a qualified BCBA or BCaBA, and clear a background check. These requirements have been in effect since January 1, 2026, under the updated BACB 2026 transition rules.

The exam is delivered in person only at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers. Remote proctoring is no longer available. The total cost to sit for the exam is $110, made up of a $65 BACB application fee and a $45 Pearson VUE exam appointment fee. The passing score is a scaled 200 out of 250, which equals roughly 80% correct on the scored questions. First-time pass rates have been declining, making thorough exam prep more important than ever.

Every question has four answer choices with only one correct response. The 10 unscored pilot questions are mixed in throughout the exam and cannot be identified, so treat all 85 questions with equal effort. Understanding the domain structure and how questions are weighted helps you allocate study time where it matters most. Our 85-question practice exam uses the same domain distribution as the actual test.

Frequently Asked Questions

RBT Exam Questions, Answered

Everything you need to know about the Registered Behavior Technician® exam, from exam format and scoring to cost and study strategy.

The Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®) exam is a professional certification exam administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) that tests entry-level competency in delivering Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. Passing the RBT exam is the final step to earning the RBT credential, which certifies that you can implement behavior-analytic services in a safe and ethical manner.

The RBT exam contains 85 total multiple-choice questions, of which 75 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot items used to develop future exams. You have 90 minutes to complete all 85 questions. Each question has four answer choices with only one correct response, and the unscored items are not identified so you must treat all 85 with equal effort. Our free 85-question practice exam matches this exact format.

The RBT exam covers six content domains based on the BACB RBT Task List 3rd Edition: Data Collection & Graphing (13 questions), Behavior Assessment (8 questions), Behavior Acquisition (19 questions), Behavior Reduction (14 questions), Documentation & Reporting (10 questions), and Ethics & Professional Conduct (11 questions). Behavior Acquisition is the largest domain, so prioritize it in your study plan. Use our Behavior Acquisition quiz and Data Collection quiz to build domain-specific confidence.

The RBT exam is delivered in person only at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers. Remote proctoring is no longer available, having ended in 2023. You schedule your exam appointment through your Pearson VUE account after receiving your Authorization to Test (ATT) letter from the BACB. The exam is computer-based and you will be monitored by Pearson VUE testing-center staff throughout the session.

The RBT exam passing score is a scaled 200 out of 250, which translates to answering roughly 80% of the scored questions correctly, or about 60 out of 75. The BACB does not publish a national average score, but first-time pass rates have declined in recent years, making thorough preparation critical. Aim to score consistently above 85% on our RBT practice exams before scheduling your actual exam appointment so you have a comfortable buffer above the minimum.

The BACB allows up to 8 total attempts within a 12-month window following your initial application approval. You must wait at least 7 days between each attempt. There is no additional BACB retake application fee, but you must pay the $45 Pearson VUE scheduling fee for each retake attempt. If you do not pass within 8 attempts or your 12-month window expires, you must reapply and complete a new Competency Assessment before testing again. Individual employers or programs may have stricter retake limits.

Most RBT candidates study for 4 to 8 weeks, spending roughly 30 to 60 total hours reviewing material. The most commonly difficult domain is Behavior Acquisition, which covers prompting, chaining, discrete trial training, and reinforcement schedules, so budget extra time there. Start by taking our free diagnostic practice exam to identify your weak areas, then use our domain quizzes and flashcards to fill gaps before doing full-length mock exams in the final week.

You must bring one valid, government-issued photo ID with your signature that matches the name in your BACB account exactly. Personal items, phones, notes, food, and drinks are not permitted in the testing area. The Pearson VUE testing center provides secure locker storage for your belongings and supplies scratch paper or an erasable note board. Arrive early because the clock does not stop for breaks taken during the exam.

The total cost to take the RBT exam is $110: a $65 non-refundable BACB application fee plus a $45 Pearson VUE exam appointment fee paid when you schedule your test. Retakes cost another $45 Pearson VUE fee per attempt with no additional BACB charge. Some employers in the ABA field cover or reimburse exam fees, so it is worth asking your supervisor or hiring organization. There are no known fee waivers or discounts offered by the BACB for the RBT exam at this time.
